Tonight I spent forever downloading the new OpenSuSE 11.0 Installation DVD to give the final a try.
It took me forever. For some reason the people who download the torrent version don’t seed worth shit.. and so I ended up going the http route. After 3 hours of downloading I had ~3 minutes left on the download, and bam! I accidentally hit the wrong key on the keyboard when switching to another window — this ends up restarting the whole download..
Finally at the end of the day I have the thing downloaded, burned to a DVD, and installed.
Simple Opinions:
Installation is easier than earlier versions and there are more options than with Ubuntu. Having more than one Hard drive with special data on it got a bit scary for me when it tried taking my large media drive with Music, Videos, and Pictures, and making it the system disk by defaut. So, I fixed that problem and carried on. In the end the install seemed to take a lot more time than Ubuntu’s new Installation method takes.
Note: I have 2.5GB’s of RAM, and a 3.0GHz P4 HT.
After a full install I noticed it had many programs that I did not want installed by default — I even chose to have some programs not installed durring the install. Anyways, there were way more default junk programs than Ubuntu even has.
Then I try to remove and install some other programs and the package manager stalls forever on me every time I try it, until it says ‘failure’. After is says it failed I click ‘Abort’ and it starts working and finishes as if that was the install button. Everytime! Go figure..
My sound, Internet, and Graphics work nice, but I can not get Compiz effects working. On Ubuntu (Hardy Heron) it just works for me right after install.
I do however love the font rendering.. somewhat. The text looks a bit too sharp, but it is a lot more space friendly compared to Ubuntu :) Windows seem to show more content than on Ubuntu (like the song list in Banshee-1). I like being able to see more without having to scroll so much.
The ‘OpenSuSE 11.0 Gilouche’ theme and artwork of OpenSuSE is what I love most about it, I also love the default color choice and mascot :P In the end, I will be taking the theme and such from OpenSuSE and using them on Ubuntu once again.
So, back to Ubuntu I go…
